The Experiment: 200 Articles, Two Approaches

Both groups targeted keywords with comparable search volume and difficulty. Rankings: Closer Than You Think
The headline finding: AI-assisted articles reached page 1 at nearly the same rate as human-written articles. 64% of AI-assisted articles reached the first page of Google within 90 days, compared to 68% for human-written articles. The 4-percentage-point gap is within the margin of error for our sample size.
Where human content had a clear advantage was in the top 3 positions. 31% of human-written articles reached positions 1-3, compared to 22% for AI-assisted content. For highly competitive keywords (difficulty 60+), the gap widened further. This suggests that for the most competitive terms, human expertise in crafting unique angles and original insights still matters.
Cost and Speed: Where AI Dominates
The cost difference is where AI content delivers undeniable ROI. AI-assisted articles cost $47 on average (AI generation + 30-minute human review), compared to $380 for human-written articles (freelancer fees + editing). That is an 87% cost reduction. At similar ranking performance, the ROI math is overwhelming: AI-assisted content delivers 7.1x more articles per dollar spent.
Speed tells a similar story. AI-assisted articles went from keyword to published draft in 2.3 hours on average. Human-written articles took 8.5 days. For time-sensitive content — trending topics, product launches, competitive responses — this speed advantage is transformative.
The optimal strategy is not "AI or human" — it is "AI for volume, human for strategic pieces." Use AI-assisted content for your long-tail keyword coverage (80% of output) and invest human writers in cornerstone content, thought leadership, and competitive head terms (20% of output).
Engagement and Quality Metrics
Time on page was 4.2 minutes for human content vs 3.8 minutes for AI content — an 11% difference. Bounce rate was 42% vs 46%. Scroll depth was essentially identical at 67% vs 65%. These differences are meaningful but not dramatic. They suggest that well-edited AI content provides a reader experience that is close to — but not quite equal to — the best human writing.
The engagement gap narrows significantly when AI content goes through a thorough human editing pass. Articles with a 45+ minute editorial review performed within 3% of human content on all engagement metrics. The lesson: the edit is what makes AI content competitive, not the initial generation.
We stopped asking "is AI content good enough?" months ago. The data says yes. The real question is "how do we allocate our content budget between AI-assisted volume and human-crafted premium pieces to maximize organic traffic growth?"
